Abstract

The use of recycled glass sand as a complete replacement for natural sand is an important approach to sustainable construction; however, its potential for alkali–silica reaction (ASR) poses a limitation. This study investigated the effects of 10% natural zeolite and steel fiber dosages ranging from 0.5% to 1.5% on controlling ASR and improving the mechanical properties and durability of concrete containing recycled glass sand at three water-to-cementitious materials ratios of 0.4, 0.5, and 0.6. Twelve concrete mixtures, including three control mixtures and nine modified mixtures, were produced. Compressive and flexural strength, elastic modulus, capillary absorption, porosity, electrical resistivity, and AMBT and CPT tests were conducted. The results showed that the 14-day AMBT expansion decreased from 0.231% in the control mixture to approximately 0.090%, while the 28-day compressive and flexural strengths increased by approximately 9% and 8%, respectively. Reducing the water-to-cementitious materials ratio also improved microstructural densification. The combined use of zeolite and steel fibers can be considered a suitable approach for the safer utilization of recycled glass sand in concrete.
