Abstract

The simultaneous use of supplementary cementitious materials and graphene oxide nanoparticles is an effective approach for improving the mechanical properties and durability of concrete while reducing cement consumption. In this study, the effect of graphene oxide at dosages of 0–0.05% by weight of cementitious materials was investigated on three separate concrete systems: ordinary concrete, concrete containing 10% natural zeolite, and concrete containing 20% blast furnace slag. Compressive strength (at 7, 28 and 90 days), flexural strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, water absorption, and electrical resistivity were evaluated. Microstructure was also examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the addition of graphene oxide improved mechanical strength and durability indicators. The optimum graphene oxide content was 0.03% for zeolite-containing concrete and 0.04% for ordinary and slag-containing concretes. At dosages higher than the optimum, nanoparticle agglomeration caused a slight reduction in performance. Overall, the combination of 20% blast furnace slag and 0.04% graphene oxide exhibited the best mechanical and durability performance.
