Abstract

One effective method for reducing seepage through dam foundations is excavating a trench in the foundation and filling it with plastic concrete. The selection of materials required for plastic concrete depends on factors such as the desired permeability level, site conditions, local availability of materials, and the economic aspects of the project, all of which should be carefully considered. In the present study, plastic concrete specimens containing different percentages of microsilica and fiber were prepared and tested at curing ages of 7, 14, and 28 days. The results indicated that, in fiber-free concrete with varying microsilica contents, the compressive strength at 14 days increased by approximately 13% compared to that at 7 days. The addition of fibers significantly improved mechanical performance; plastic concrete containing 20 kg of fibers exhibited a 38% increase in strength compared to the control specimen, while specimens with 40 kg of fibers showed a 36% strength enhancement. Regarding water absorption behavior, for specimens without microsilica but reinforced with 20 kg of fibers, water absorption decreased by 12% and 17% at 0.5 and 1 hour, respectively, compared to fiber-free samples. For specimens containing 40 kg of fibers, the reduction in water absorption relative to the control sample was 20%, 22%, and 13% at 0.5, 1, and 2 hours, respectively. These findings demonstrate the positive influence of fiber reinforcement and microsilica on improving the mechanical properties and durability performance of plastic concrete used in seepage control systems.
