Heavyweight concrete produced with Barite aggregates of W-Azerbaijan mines

Document Type : Research Paper

Abstract

Heavyweight concrete has a special place in the construction of reactors in nuclear power plants, medical centers, accelerators research centers and military centers as protective panels. Purpose of this research, is design and manufacture of heavyweight concrete with using of barite reserves of W-Azerbaijan province. Therefore, after conducting preliminary studies on several samples of barite ore, barite ore from Shakh-Sefid mine (in Mahabad County) has been appropriated, according to ASTM C637 and ASTMC33 standards for the production of heavyweight concrete. The concrete mix designed with doing several test, and was prepared concrete with different percent of barite and heavyweight concrete made of 100% barite. In all cases the amount of cement and W/C ratio fixed, respectively is 350 (kg/m3) and 0.48. Different experimental such as physical, mechanical and nuclear doing upon the sample. The results showed that heavyweight concrete is made by combining 100% Barite (instead of sand) has a density about 3.362 (gr/cm3), compressive strength 386.73 (kg/cm2), tensile strength 54.8 (kg/cm2), modulus of elasticity 2.63×105 (kg/cm2), the ultrasonic wave velocity 4.80 (km/s) and attenuation coefficients for radiation sources of cobalt-60 and cesium-137, respectively is 0.22 cm-1 and 0.30 cm-1.
